The 41st edition of the Symposium will launch on 28 July at 7:00 p.m. An event you won’t want to miss! Official speeches will be followed by introductions to the artists and to the theme running through the 2023 events. Welcome to all!

Jacques St-Gelais Tremblay pavilion of the MACBSP
The art critic Gilles Daigneault will pay tribute to Françoise Sullivan, a major figure in the visual arts in Quebec, and to her prolific and protean body of work in several artistic disciplines: dance, sculpture, painting, photography and installation. This is an opportunity to enjoy her work again through the words of a critic who has closely followed her evolution.

Documentary. In Inuktitut and English with French subtitles.
“In this community on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, children’s laughter fills the streets while the old people ponder the passage of time. They are nomads of the wide-open spaces who are trying to get used to the strange feeling of staying put. Elisapie Isaac, a filmmaker born in Nunavik, decides to return to her roots on this breathtaking land.” (NFB)

Documentary. In French.
A film about the singer-songwriter Richard Desjardins and his sources of inspiration: his birthplace, Abitibi, the city of Rouyn-Noranda, the natural environment and some of his life experiences. Six women painters get together to create a mural based on his songs: how to go about creating a meaningful image for the community?

Jacques St-Gelais Tremblay pavilion of the MACBSP
Manon Barbeau’s talk, “De Refus global au Wapikoni: quête identitaire et cinéma” traces her path in light of what she sometimes calls “the precious power of the Inconsolable”, a deep-rooted driving force which has generated her many works, from Les Enfants de Refus Global to Wapikoni. Both a search for identity and a visceral need to connect with the other.
Bio
The director of a dozen documentaries which have won numerous awards, the filmmaker Manon Barbeau co-founded Wapikoni mobile in 2004 and founded Musique nomade in 2006, roving studios for cinematic and musical creation intended for First Nations youth and those in other vulnerable communities. In 2014, Manon Barbeau was named Officière of the Ordre national du Québec and received the Albert-Tessier award, the highest distinction in the field of cinema in Quebec. In 2016, Manon Barbeau was named a Member of the Order of Canada. Manon Barbeau is Chairperson of the Cinémathèque québécoise.

A film on the activist Innu poet and actress Natacha Kanapé Fontaine which deals with the inherited wounds of racism, the rediscovery of her roots through the Innu language and Indigenous peoples’ need for self-determination.

Lobby of the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul
The Musée ambulant is launching the latest project in its collection Colis d’art, a way to become familiar with an original work of art and an artistic medium to be put into practice. Each Colis d’art (“art package”) in the collection presents an original take on artistic creation, with different artists each time!
The Musée ambulant is a small itinerant museum which travels the highways and byways of the province to bring art to the public, wherever they may be. Touring schools, seniors’ residences, festivals, day camps and daycare centres, the Musée transports studios and festive exhibitions which promote greater accessibility to contemporary practices in visual art.

Square of the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie Saint-Paul (in case of rain, activities will be held in the Jacques St-Gelais Tremblay pavilion of the MACBSP)
The Musée ambulant invites you to plunge into the world of the Toronto artist of Mexican descent Erik Jerezano, whose drawings feature a mysterious and fantastic bestiary. A creation workshop, free of charge and suitable for the entire family, will give those who stop by the opportunity to make their own paper sculpture.
This project was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Government of Quebec and the MRC de Charlevoix within the context of the Cultural Development Agreement.

This film tells the story of the life of the photographer-writer Serge-Emmanuel Jongué, a person of mixed race born in France who immigrated to Quebec, through his own writings, images, photographs, memories and the questions which haunted him. A film deemed of exceptional quality by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Soul Avatar, Selfie ton âme is a participatory installation which explores the self-portrait of the soul and whose main role is to facilitate connecting with oneself. The installation employs salvaged materials, 3D animation, the site as sculpture, instructions as vehicle and expression as an artistic manifestation.
* Exceptionally, the activity will end at 3:00 pm on Sunday August 27th.
Bio
Drawing on her experience in graphic art and her career in outreach (MMFA, MAC, MAPP MTL), Laporte creates an iconic, distinctive and accessible world, an empathic and playful mythology which gives form to the invisible in each of us.

To close the event, artistic director Anne Beauchemin will look back on this edition of the Symposium. With the artworks finished and the creative activities completed, she will examine the artists’ contribution to this year’s theme, Figures. Who is “I”? Who is “We”? She will highlight from a broad perspective the particular point of view embodied by each artist in their work: their ideas, the theme or themes taken up and the means employed. This event will take the form of a talk illustrated with works created during this edition of the event.
