BIO Sebastian Mügge received his MFA from Umeå Academy of Fine Arts. His drawing and installation projects often result in site-specific pieces and have been exhibited at Kalmar Konstmuseum (Sweden), The Koppel Project (United Kingdom), Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art (Finland), 126 Gallery (Ireland), das esszimmer (Germany), Villa de Bank (Netherlands) and Survival Kit (Latvia).
APPROACH To explore complex societal issues with the help of sensual, voluminous and multifaceted pieces has been Sebastian Mügge’s main focus for the last years. His goal is to combine theoretical concerns with an exploration of the distinct possibilities of architecture and landscape. An outspoken social perspective with an examination of issues such as unleashed urbanism, gentrification and survival of rural spaces are present. In times of segregation that divide cities in poor neighbourhoods and wealthy gated communities, there is certainly a tremendous need of radical solutions for a more sustainable lifestyle. What can one learn from the mistakes of the past, how can one prevent horrific excesses in the future and what kind of role can art play in the discussion?
PROJECT Turning the studio into an experimental laboratory and construction site, the intense process of consistent life-drawing sessions will result into an expanding, multifaceted drawing piece in various techniques that grows like an unstoppable virus which will conquer the entire space including the floor. Eventually a thought-provoking and complex metropolis on paper will arise. The artist aims to create a spatial site that will allow the audience to dive into the work as in an alternative universe. Mügge also wishes to explore both similarities and differences between Quebec and Sweden that share a comparable climate, landscape, mentality and cultural references. Universal issues like urbanization and the survival of rural spaces will be investigated and great contrasts will be explored in a humorous and playful manner.
