BIO Sylvie Bouchard’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at venues such as the Musée régional de Rimouski, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. It has also been featured in several group exhibitions in Quebec and at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, France and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mons, Belgium.
APPROACH Sylvie Bouchard began creating of in situ painting installations in the 1980s. These installations led to an interest in scenography, taking into account human scale and establishing proximity with the viewer. Her artistic practice is tied up with the role her work can play in the discursive space around fiction, history, architecture, theatre, the memory of sites and present-day climate change. For Bouchard, today’s climate upheaval makes our memory of sites associated with industrialisation and the environment resonate more eloquently.
PROJECT Rassembler le regard is made up of three partitions set up in such a way as to create a viewing angle suggestive of an imaginary point of view. The project will play on the perception of spaces inspired by things found in the Charlevoix region which will become part of a more theatrical and fictive representation. The project includes iconographic elements of the landscape and more abstract forms (incongruous objects, statuettes, geometric forms and others). Like museum attendants, these elements appear to indicate where to look in the work. For visitors, the studio will take on the appearance of a working laboratory, enabling them to see the stages of preparing and producing the project. Rassembler le regard conveys a will to see and to reconsider the status of the image in relation to a cultural memory open to new paradigms.
