_Temporairement perpétuel Mana Rouholamini will foster conversations around sharing and words with members of the public at The International Contemporary Art Symposium of Baie-Saint-Paul. Her inspiration is the “Nazr” (“Vow”) custom associated with saffron rice pudding, a Persian dessert, and the reappropriation of this custom by Iranian youth.
_Biography Mana Rouholamini (elle-she-her) explores notions of identity, the meaning of words and their relationship to ideas, through the prism of different languages. Her artistic practice includes installation, drawing, site-specific actions, printmaking, artist's books and digital prints. Her work is nourished by literature, proverbs, traditions and folk stories, which she attempts to update and contextualize. She holds a master's degree from York University in Toronto and a bachelor's degree from Azad University in Teheran, Iran. _Approach Mana Rouholamini finds that her idea of the world, like her identity(ies), is largely based on the languages through which she thinks about a subject, and depends much less on where she comes from or on the country in which she lives.
Most of the time, a word is at the origin of her approach. A word makes her think of another word, of an idea, of a song, of a poem. “Eau”, ‘water’, and ‘??’ make her think of the same substance, but differently. She examines the word, the idea it evokes and its connotations. From this whole, meaning emerges. She exploits language and word association to examine “meaning” in this space at the crossroads of different languages.
