_Approach Josiane Roberge explores the impalpable nature of the encounter between the self and the other through video, photography and performance. Her work features people close to her (non-actors) and “indicates through the gaze” their state of being and inner movements. Roberge seeks sobriety and simplicity in her images in order to leave all the space to what can unfold through contemplation. Through the minimalism of her work, she tries to reveal the hidden or unheard nuances of human experience, an invisible door she attempts to cross through in her work.
_Project During the symposium, Josiane Roberge will produce a videographic and photographic work which will seek to make visible various dispositions of the human spirit. This work will be made up of a series of portraits highlighting the richness of the metaphorical space floating over our heads, a suspended place where emptiness, fullness, volume and vastness co-exist.
Roberge will let herself be inspired by her encounters with people from the Charlevoix region, whom she will depict by surrounding them with different materials (gentle or harsh, full or spacious) tied up with specific concepts. With this arrangement, she seeks to immerse the viewer into the intimacy of each face and to draw out of this a variety of human experiences. With these portraits, she hopes to create powerful images capable of speaking to the viewer’s unconscious.
